Rep. Joe Wilson (RS.C.) shouted "you lie!" after President Obama stated that his health reform proposal would not cover illegal immigrants during his address before a joint session of Congress Wednesday night.
"There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants," Obama said. "This, too, is false – the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally."
However, James Edwards, coauthor of The Congressional Politics of Immigration Reform says: "No where does the [health care] bill require verification of one’s eligibility on citizenship or immigrant status. Not in the Medicaid part. Not in the Health Insurance Exchange. Not in the government-run insurance option. Not in the taxpayer subsidy for health premium payment. Nowhere..."
