New York Times Washington correspondent, David Sanger, author of a soon-to-be-released book on the Afghan war, notes that when President Obama ordered a troop surge in Afghanistan in 2009, with a firm timetable for withdrawal, he did so with the stated intention that, win or lose, the troops would be withdrawn by the set deadline.
This unfortunate fact prompted a panel discussion as to whether the President's decision was "conscionable" or not. Of course, the word "conscionable", does not exist when it comes to the President's political aspirations, but that's besides the point. The panel also discussed some other significant points.
